Singapore Thong Chai Medical Institution (STCMI) was founded in 1867. For more than 140 years, the Institution has adhered to the principles advocated by its founders of providing free medical consultation and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to all regardless of race, religion or nationality. Backed by generations of strong Boards of Directors, it has grown from a simple community medical clinic to a sizable free TCM medical institution today. Through the years of vicissitudes, the Thong Chai culture has remained unchanged, and it remains a free clinic that treats all without any discrimination.
Thong Chai established community-based outpatient clinics in Ang Mo Kio and Sengkang in 2012, for the benefit of the elderly patients in the community. With the completion of the building extension and the opening of the two community-based clinics, it now provides free treatment to more than 1200 patients daily, and its yearly expenses exceed $5 million.
Since its founding, Thong Chai has always been an independent community charitable organisation. Its success is possible due to the strong support of philanthropists from all walks of life and the selfless contributions of its directors. It is not easy to run the institution in the face of ever-rising costs. However, Thong Chai will press on and keep abiding by its founding principles. As the impact of businesses on society deepens, businesses could play a bigger role in the sustainability of charities. We hope that businesses that adopt the concept of corporate social responsibility as practice would make their contributions to Thong Chai’s cause.
Your generous donations and support will enable the charitable institution to operate in perpetuity!
